“The curious paradox is that when you accept yourself just as you are, then you change.” -Carl Rogers
You have let other people dictate how you view yourself. You have given love and time to those who weren’t deserving. You have stayed too long in friendships or relationships because you ‘had to’. You are afraid to ask for what you want or need because you don’t know how it will be received. You feel like you’re mostly an adult, except for the parts of you that still feel like a child or teenager.
I’ve been there, too. I used to hold those beliefs until I worked on myself and changed. I would not have dedicated my life to helping others heal if I hadn’t have done the healing myself.
“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.” -Pema Chödrön
